MARSHALL, Texas – An epic effort by the Millsaps men's soccer program was enough to best East Texas Baptist University, 2-1 at Cornish Field on Friday. Graduate midfielder
Ruben Hamann provided the game-winning strike in the 87th minute to lift the Majors.
Millsaps (1-1) was outshot by ETBU (1-2-1), 15-9 and 6-5 with on-target attempts, but the Majors were able to overcome this statistic.
Sophomore forward
Jacks Dowdy also scored the opening goal of the game, while his brother,
Wilkins Dowdy, made four saves in the victory.
Following a corner kick early in the first half, the Majors kept possession and connected on numerous passes, the last of which was booted home by Jacks in front of the net.
Kaleb Newton was credited with the assist on the goal that came in the 21st minute.
ETBU looked poised to tie the match in the final 15 minutes of the first half, but Wilkins provided an acrobatic, jumping save with his glove that was labeled for the top left corner. The Tigers fired a shot over the net on the ensuing corner kick.
The hosts from Marshall, Texas broke through to knot the match at 1-1 in the 63rd minute on a successful corner. The Tigers had momentum following the tally, but the Majors held resilient.
A foul deep in ETBU territory gave Millsaps a free kick chance. In the 87th minute and the ball just outside the box on the left side of the field, opportunity presented itself at the feet of Hamann. Facing a severe angle, the Giessen, Germany, product fired a rocket that sailed across the goalmouth and deflected off the far post for the epic goal.
The Majors were able to wind down the closing minutes and secure the exciting 2-1 triumph.
Millsaps remains in the Lone Star State and will face LeTourneau University, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Live video and live stats links are available at gomajors.com.
