LONGVIEW, Texas – The Millsaps men's soccer program fell short to LeTourneau University, 2-0 at the Joyce Family Athletic Complex on Sunday.
Wilkins Dowdy made five saves in defeat, while
Jacks Dowdy scored in his second consecutive match for the Majors.
It was a tale of two halves as all four goals were scored after intermission. Millsaps (1-2) was out shot 9-3 in the second compared to 4-3 in the first half. Putting pressure on Millsaps' defense all game, the Yellowjackets also posted 12 corner kicks.
LeTourneau (3-1) found themselves deep inside enemy territory in the second minute of the game when they intercepted a throw-in, but sophomore goalkeeper
Dowdy punched the ball away.
The Majors exhibited their defensive prowess early when they successfully defended three corner kicks within two minutes.
Millsaps recorded its first on-target opportunity of the contest when freshman midfielder
Mason Boyd kicked a streaming ball towards the right side of the goal that was saved by the LETU goalkeeper in the 29th minute.
Two minutes later, Dowdy made another crucial save on a corner kick set piece. This would be the last shot on goal for both teams leading into 0-0 deadlock at halftime.
The Yellowjackets wasted no time trying to score one minute into the second half when Dowdy made another save that ricocheted out of bounds for a corner kick. The Majors were able to stand tall once again when the shot from the set piece sailed wide right for a Majors' goal kick.
LETU was finally able to strike first when the ball bounced perfectly for their forward Niko Stavros to knock it into the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage in the 54th minute. Just two minutes later, Dowdy came up huge with a penalty kick stop with an outstretched glove, which featured a shot labeled for the low-right side of goal.
Looking to tie the game, the Majors came up short on a prime opportunity following a free kick right outside the penalty box, which sailed just high of the goal post in the 68th minute.
LeTourneau would gain breathing room in the form of a header from a corner kick in the 74th minute. They would then add another marker on a counter attack in the 87th minute for a 3-0 lead.
Fighting all the way to the end, a goal by
Jacks Dowdy in the lower left corner reached the back of the net in the 87th minute to cut the final deficit to 3-1.
Millsaps will head home to Harper Davis Field and will challenge Blue Mountain College, beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17. Live video and live stats links are available at gomajors.com.
