Volleyball Claims Fifth Match in a Row on Saturday

Majors Sweep Maryville for Third Victory at Stormy Petrel Classic

ATLANTA – The Millsaps women's volleyball team continued its winning ways by earning its fifth match in a row on Saturday afternoon. Competing at the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrel Classic, Millsaps (5-2) won its third match in two days, sweeping Maryville College (1-5) at the Dorough Field House.

Junior Bre Reed (seven kills) and senior Alyssa Jolly (four kills) powered the Majors offensively with 10 points each and a combined seven blocks at the net.

Continuing her impressive freshman campaign, Anna Capezzera tallied six kills and three aces.

Sophomore outside hitter Brenna Macaluso posted seven kills and six digs. Junior Mary Tebbe was a jack-of-all-trades with 23 assists, three aces, and two kills. Jolly and Hannah Mattke were named named to the Stromy Petrel Classic All-Tournament Team.

With the Majors leading 12-9 in the first set, a kill by Capezzera sparked a 13-4 run to give the Majors the first-set victory at 25-13.

Using that momentum, the Majors notched seven of the first eight points in set two. Millsaps would not give up any ground to the Scots for a 25-15 win to go ahead 2-0 in the match.

Looking for the sweep, Millsaps found themselves in a 9-4 hole early in the third set. Clawing their way back, the Majors willed their way back to tie the match at 19-19, highlighted by two back-to-back aces by Tebbe that contributed to a 6-0 run. A kill by Jolly would seal the win for the Majors at 25-20.

Jolly finished the three-match classic with 20 kills, nine blocks, 19 digs and two aces, while Mattke finished with 37 digs and three aces.

Millsaps will look to win their sixth straight match while opening conference play against Berry College at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 18. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
