JACKSON, Miss. – A dramatic ending capped off a thrilling match between the Millsaps men's soccer program and Blue Mountain College at Harper Davis Field on Friday. The Majors were bested by the Toppers, 1-0 in double overtime.
Both teams offered a flurry of opportunities with Millsaps (1-3) outshooting Blue Mountain (3-2) by a count of 27-23. The Toppers held slight edges with shots on target, 7-6 and corner kicks, 8-7.
The Majors outshot the Toppers, 16-6 in the first half but things flipped with the visitors possessing an 11-5 advantage in the second. Extra time saw both teams muster six shot attempts.
Millsaps dominated the first few minutes of the match with senior
Sergey Kolesnik nearly connecting on an attempt that scooted past the Topper keeper but sailed just over the crossbar.
Blue Mountain would then hit the crossbar in the 14th minute, which helped sophomore goaltender
Wilkins Dowdy. Dowdy finished the match with six saves.
The Majors would recover with a stretch of seven unanswered shots spanning the 29th through the 34th minute.
The Toppers would hit the crossbar again in the 51st minute but neither team could break the scoreless tie in regulation time.
Millsaps and Blue Mountain would trade chances in the first overtime and head to the decisive second extra frame. In the 106th minute, the Toppers Antonio Gutierrez corralled a teammate's blocked shot and found on open Breno Neves who provided the finish and a 1-0 golden goal.
The Majors will look to rebound on Saturday as the team returns to Harper Davis Field and face Louisiana College. Opening kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live stats and video available at gomajors.com.
