TUNICA, Miss. – The Millsaps men's golf program opened their fall slate with a strong showing against several ranked foes at the Rhodes College Fall Collegiate Classic. Junior
Andrew Lovejoy highlighted the three rounds at the Tunica National Golf Course with a 3-over 219, tying him for 10th-place overall.
Rounds One and Two were played on a 7,077-yard course on Monday, while Round Three covered 6,991 yards on Tuesday. All three rounds were par 72.
The Humble, Texas, product started with a 5-over 77, but responded with a 3-under 69. He then closed out the classic with a 1-over 73.
Lovejoy was the last Major on the men's side to finish in the Top 10. He did so at the Mississippi College Invitational, held March 2-3, 2019. Over three rounds, he carded a 214 (-2).
As a team, Millsaps finished 13th in a field loaded with ranked teams and some receiving votes in the Bushnell/Golfweek Preseason Poll. Winning the event was No. 4 Huntingdon College, firing an incredible 2-over as a squad.
A quartet of returners rounded out the scoring for the Majors in juniors
Krtin Udith,
Gabe Brooks and
Charlie Ellery as well as sophomore
Harrison Rhymes. Udith finished tied for 61st at 21-over par, Brooks was tied for 68th at 21-over, Ellery closed tied for 72nd at 26-over and Rhymes finished 87th.
The men will next compete at the Royal Lakes Fall Invitational in Flowery Branch, Ga., Sept. 26-27. Oglethorpe is set to host at the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club.
On the women's side, Millsaps will face Centenary College on Monday, Sept. 20 in dual play. The Majors will battle on the Querbes Park Golf Course in Shreveport, La.
