JACKSON, Miss. — In an exciting back-and-forth match, the Millsaps men's soccer team (1-4-1) battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with rival Belhaven University (2-2-1) at Harper Davis Field on Monday. It was the Majors' third match in four days, but the Majors showed high energy throughout as graduate midfielder
Matthew Reed scored the Millsaps tally in the 56th minute.
The Majors were doubled in shot attempts by the Blazers (34-17), but were more accurate with nine shots on goal compared to just seven shots on goal for Belhaven.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Wilkins Dowdy registered six saves for the Majors.
After four combined saves by the opposing goal keepers to begin the match, Belhaven struck first with a left-footed laser to the back of the net in the 20th minute.
Both sides would play to a standstill for the rest of the first half with the score 1-0 at intermission.
Early in the second half, Belhaven's goalkeeper made an outstanding save in the top left corner of the net when graduate midfielder
Ruben Hamann booted the ball.
The Majors remained the aggressors in the second half, and their persistence paid off when
Jacks Dowdy passed the ball across the penalty box to a wide open Reed to tie the game at 1-1.
As the game progressed to extra time, both teams had ample opportunities to score with several shots just sailing high of the cross bar.
The best chance for the Majors to come away with the golden goal was when freshman midfielder
Kade Folse hit the cross bar and fell innocently for a goal kick in the 91st minute.
As extra time came to a close, both teams competed to the end but dueled to a draw. Monday's was the conclusion of a postponed match from Sept. 1.
The Majors will begin conference play against Rhodes College at Harper Davis Field this Friday, Sept. 24. Opening kick is scheduled for 5 p.m. with live stats and video available at gomajors.com.
