Majors Fall to Birmingham-Southern in SAA Volleyball Action

Millsaps Battles BSC to Four Sets on the Road on Wednesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps volleyball team (5-5, 0-3 SAA) was defeated by the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers (8-4, 3-0 SAA) on Wednesday. The Majors were outdueled in four sets (19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 11-25) at Bill Battle Coliseum.

Senior middle hitter Alyssa Jolly led the Majors offensively with 15 kills and six digs.

Junior right side hitter Bre Reed also had double-digit kills with 10, while posting two blocks.

Junior libero Mary Tebbe was everywhere on the hardwood with 32 assists and 11 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Brenna Macaluso had a versatile match with 18 digs, seven kills and four blocks.

The Panthers raced out to a 10-2 lead to start the match. Initiated with a kill by Macaluso, the Majors would utilize a 5-0 run to cut the deficit down to 16-15. Following a timeout, the Panthers would regain separation with a 5-0 run of their own for the 25-19 win in set one.

With the score tied 2-2 in the second set, the Majors surged ahead with a 4-0 run capitalized with a kill by Jolly. The Panthers would gradually cut into the lead and tie the set at 14 all, resulting in a timeout by Millsaps. A pair of 3-0 runs would power the Panthers to a 25-21 victory in the second set.

With the score tied 9-9 in the third set, a kill by rising freshman Anna Capezzera sparked a 5-0 run for the Majors. Both teams would trade points in a competitive set. Following a timeout by BSC, Millsaps would look to finish the Panthers with consecutive kills by Reed and Jolly. Another kill by Jolly would give the Majors a 25-22 win in set three.

A duo of 5-0 scoring bursts would give BSC a comfortable 18-5 lead to start the fourth set. Trying to claw their way back into the set, the Majors would respond with a 3-0 run to cut into the lead. The Panthers would respond with a 4-0 run to end the Majors' momentum en route to a 25-11 win in the set and match.

The Majors will now compete in their seventh consecutive road match, which will take place at Hendrix on Saturday, Sept. 22. The contest is set for a 12 p.m. start with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
