Hendrix Edges Volleyball in Close Sets

Senior Alyssa Jolly Led Millsaps with 11 Kills on Saturday

CONWAY, Ark. – The Millsaps volleyball team was swept in a tightly contested SAA conference match by Hendrix College, 25-22, 25-23, 25-17 on Saturday. Senior outside hitter Alyssa Jolly powered 11 kills, four digs and four blocks inside Grove Gymnasium in the Majors' seventh consecutive match away from home.

Junior Mary Tebbe showed an impressive effort with 25 assists and seven digs. Defensively, fellow classmate and libero Hannah Mattke added five digs.
Freshman outside hitter Anna Capezzera tallied five kills, two aces, two digs and two blocks in the contest.

In total, the match featured 16 ties and four lead changes across three sets. Millsaps (5-6, 0-4 SAA) opened the day with the first point and saw the score tied on four occasions as the teams battled to a 6-6 tie.

Hendrix (7-4, 4-0 SAA) would then surge to an 18-9 lead, but the Majors would close the deficit. Millsaps would use a 9-2 run to get back into the opening set courtesy of two Jolly kills and one each by junior Bre Reed and Capezzera.

Millsaps would continue to challenge back and forth, but fall in the opening set, 25-22.

The second set alone featured nine ties and two lead changes. Capezzera would ignite a 4-0 run by the Majors early, giving the squad a 9-4 edge. The Warriors would recover and turn the set into a contest with short rallies.

With Hendrix up 22-18, Millsaps would battle back to tie the set with a sophomore Brenna Macaluso and Reed kill. Jolly would add a kill to knot the score again at 23-23, but the Warriors would take the final two points and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Up 7-5 in the third set, Hendrix would use a crucial 6-0 scoring streak to put the Warriors firmly ahead and eventually claim the match with a 25-17 final tally.

Millsaps will return to action against Rhodes College at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 26. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
