MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the final stretch of their eight-match road trip, the Millsaps volleyball team (6-6, 1-4 SAA) was victorious over Rhodes College (7-7, 1-4 SAA) in five exciting sets on Sunday. The Majors won 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10 at Mallory Gymnasium.
Senior middle hitter
Alyssa Jolly led the Majors offensively with 17 kills, 15 digs and a career-high 11 blocks. It was the third match this season Jolly totaled 17 or more kills.
Junior right side hitter
Bre Reed also had a strong game with eight kills and four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter
Brenna Macaluso filled the stat sheet with 20 digs, 10 kills and a career-best five aces.
Junior setter
Hannah Mattke was a defensive dynamo with 26 digs, while classmate
Mary Tebbe did an amazing job setting up her teammates with 35 assists.
Rhodes had more kills than Millsaps (60-44), but the Majors were more disciplined with 10 less errors than the Lynx (33-23). The match was tied 30 times and featured 18 lead changes, including 13 ties and seven changes in the fourth set alone.
Leading the Lynx 7-5, the Majors took off in the first set when a kill by junior
Regan Cooper sparked a 10-2 run for the Majors. Consecutive kills by Reed and Jolly would award Millsaps a 25-18 set one victory.
Rhodes claimed the first three points of the second set. A kill by Jolly would spark a 6-2 run for the Majors to take their first lead of the set at 6-5. Following a Lynx timeout, the hosts would surge back ahead with an 7-2 run of their own. The Majors would claw their way back when an ace by Macaluso would even the score at 15-15. Rhodes would immediately benefit from a 3-0 run that would prove to be enough for a 25-20 win in set two.
In a third set thriller, there would be nine ties and six lead changes. Both teams would trade points for a 16-16 score to begin the set. Five straight errors by Rhodes would prove enough separation for the Majors to get the 25-22 victory and take a commanding 2-1 lead.
With the score tied at 7-7 in the fourth set, a kill by Macaluso initiated a 3-0 run for the Majors. In the same theme as the third set, both teams would find themselves at a 18-18 deadlock. Rhodes would utilize a 4-0 exchange to help tie the match at 2-2 with a 25-22 win.
Punctuated with three straight kills by Millsaps, the Majors raced out to a 5-1 lead in the final set. After two straight points by Rhodes, a 4-0 run by the Majors would give them breathing room and secure a 15-10 victory.
Millsaps will head home to the Hangar Dome to host Sewanee at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 2. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
