Men’s Soccer Downed by Huntingdon in Home Opener

Wilkins Dowdy Made a Career-High Nine Saves in 3-0 Defeat

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's soccer program (0-1) fell to Huntingdon College (2-1), 3-0 at Harper Davis Field in their home opener on Tuesday.

There were several exciting offensive chances throughout the night as the Hawks outshot the Majors 23-17, including 12-6 of shots on target.

The action was fast and furious from the start when sophomore goalkeeper Wilkins Dowdy, who posted a career-high nine saves, made a heroic fingertip save in the seventh minute.

As both defenses stood tall for the majority of the first half, the Majors' had a stellar opportunity to find the net when Sergey Kolesnik booted a laser from his right foot that was corralled in by the Hawks' goalkeeper 18 minutes in.

Huntingdon was able to strike their first tally of the game off a beautiful kick in the box that struck the bottom left corner of the net in the final minute of the first half.

Looking to knot the game up at 1-1, a prime opportunity for the Majors to find their first goal of the season came when sophomore forward Jacks Dowdy struck an on-goal ball toward the net that was saved by the goalkeeper's full extension in the 49th minute.

Gaining separation, the Hawks were then able to knock in two more goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half to extend their lead to 3-0.

Both teams exhibited their competitive nature, as there were a combined 30 fouls and six yellow cards distributed during the game.

Millsaps will head to the Lone Star State next with a matchup at East Texas Baptist University. Opening kick is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10 with live video and live stats links available at gomajors.com.
