Balanced Effort Helps Women’s Basketball Cruise Past Hendrix, 66-37

Majors Hold Conference Opponent to Lowest Score Since Feb. 9, 2020

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 66-37 victory against the Hendrix Warriors inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday afternoon.

Led by assistant coach Taelor Manning, who was filling in for head coach Justin LeBlanc, a trio of Majors reached double figures in scoring as junior guard Briasha King led all players with 19 points and a career-high tying four steals.

In her first home game this season, third-year guard Elecia Lartigue made the most in her return with 15 points, three rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Andrea Rayford posted another dominating effort in the paint with 12 points and game-highs of seven rebounds and three blocks.

Millsaps (7-8, 2-2 SAA) exceled in points off turnovers with a 29-5 advantage. They also outrebounded their opponents 37-27 and outscored the Warriors in the paint, 32-8. Hendrix (6-8, 0-3 SAA) was held to 18.8 percent from the field and only made nine field goals in the entirety of the ball game (9-of-48).

The nine field goals were least allowed by the Majors since Jan. 1, 2019 in a 60-22 win over Birmingham-Southern. The 37 points were also a season-low for Hendrix, and it was the lowest points yielded by Millsaps in a conference game since Feb. 9, 2020 (vs. Hendrix, 59-33).

The Majors utilized a smothering zone defense and did not allow a point entering the first media timeout and added a pair of free throws out of the break to go up 9-0.

After an 8-3 push from the Warriors, first-year guard Emily Adams capped off the strong first quarter with a pair of made free throws to lead 14-8.

Neither team was able to find the bottom of the basket in the first two minutes of the second quarter, but Lartigue was able to break the ice with a driving layup to initiate a 10-0 Major run.

The Warriors' first basket in the second interval came at 2:57 to cut Millsaps' advantage to 24-11. In Millsaps' final possession of the first half, junior forward Mikenzi Laster and freshman forward Whitney Novak showed great high-low team work when Laster found Novak under the basket to push the halftime score to 28-13.

Millsaps would start off the second half strong with a made free throw by Lartigue pushing their lead up to 19 points at 35-16. With both teams trading baskets in what was the most competitive of the quarters, the Majors would take a 20-point advantage heading into the final frame (45-25).

Hendrix implemented a press defense early in the fourth, but Millsaps was able to handle it and expand their lead to as much as 65-33 following a baseline layup by King. The Majors would ultimately cruise to a 66-37 victory.

Millsaps will remain at home and host Oglethorpe University inside the Hangar Dome on Friday. The scheduled tipoff is 6 p.m. with live video and stats links available on the women's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
