Majors Unable to Hold Off Centre in the Second Half on Sunday

Briasha King Tallies a Career-High 22 Points in 62-58 Road Defeat

Danville, Ky. –  The Millsaps women's basketball team were unable to hold off a Centre charge in the second half, falling 62-58 on the road on Sunday. Junior guard Briasha King tallied a career-best 22 points to go along with two steals and three rebounds inside the Alumni Gymnasium.

Senior forward Andrea Rayford (11 points, five rebounds) and freshman forward Whitney Novak (nine points, six rebounds) were key contributors for the Majors.

Additionally, junior guard Elecia Lartigue had an all-around strong game with nine points, six boards, four assists and three steals.

Millsaps (6-8, 1-2 SAA) held a 33-25 advantage at halftime thanks to a 12-2 turnover differential. Centre (6-7, 3-0 SAA) closed their turnover deficit to 18-15 by game's end, which turned the game in its favor.

The Majors controlled points in the paint (38-16) and points off turnovers (18-7). Centre held Millsaps to 2-of-17 from three-point range.

One make from beyond the arc came from Meagan Bickmann, who pushed the Millsaps lead to 22-16 after the first in what was a back-and-forth opening quarter.

A Taylor Frank jumper midway through the second gave the Majors their largest edge of the contest, up 11 at 27-16. King closed the quarter with a nifty layup to put Millsaps ahead, 33-25 at the break.

The Colonels would use a 16-3 run to take a 41-36 advantage with just under four minutes to play in the third frame. Rayford would then hit a jumper with 11 seconds to play to cut the Centre lead to 46-45 with 10 minutes remaining.

Centre would grow its edge to 60-53 with 5:25 to play, but Millsaps would battle back. A pair of free throws by Roe, a layup by Lartigue and King free throw cut the disadvantage to 60-58 with just under three minutes on the clock.

The Colonels would hold tough, however and sink two more free throws for a 62-58 final tally.

Millsaps returns home after a six-game road swing and will host Rhodes College inside the Hangar Dome on Friday. The scheduled tipoff is 6 p.m. with live video and stats links available on the women's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
