Defensive Stands Halt Millsaps Football’s Win Streak at BSC

Pair of Goal-Line Stops Enough to Slow Attack on Saturday, Majors Next Host Homecoming on Oct. 22

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A couple of goal-line stands were enough to slow Millsaps football's attack and end the Majors' two-game winning streak at Birmingham-Southern on Saturday. The Majors fell 28-0 in a back-and-forth contest inside General Krulak Stadium.

Millsaps (3-3, 2-1 SAA) tallied 16 first downs compared to 20 by Birmingham-Southern (4-2, 2-1 SAA). The Panthers were able to hold strong defensively, were receiving votes in the D3football.com poll and held the Majors to 0-for-6 on fourth-down conversions.

Sophomore quarterback Brody Davis completed 16-of-34 passes with an interception. Senior Moïse Tezzo hauled in four catches for 49 yards.

Sophomore inside linebacker Thomas Patterson finished with a career- and game-high 12 tackles, including 1.5 TFLs and one forced fumble. Freshman inside linebacker Braylon Wills forced a fumble, tallied a sack and five tackles.

Birmingham-Southern scored on their opening offensive play following a 58-yard completion. The Panthers then added a 12-yard rushing touchdown to build an early 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Millsaps marched down to the Panther 18-yard line in an attempt to answer, but were stopped on fourth-and-four.

BSC made it a 21-0 contest when the Panthers added a 40-yard pass-and-catch on its next possession.

Both defenses would tighten up for the remainder of the first half. The Majors would break up a pass on their 31-yard line on a fourth-down attempt to begin the second quarter.

A couple possessions later Millsaps would then advance the ball to the BSC one-yard line. A pair of rushes were stopped keeping the game at 21-0 heading into halftime.

The Majors looked poised to start a comeback in the second half when a forced fumble on the second play of the third quarter gave Millsaps control of the ball. Patterson forced the loose ball, which was jumped on by junior Peyton Leingang.

After a four-yard rush by Jordan Osborn, Davis found graduate Nic Hayes for a 26-yard completion. Hayes was called short at the one-yard line and the Majors were kept out of the end zone on the next four plays.

Needing three scores to tie the game, Millsaps would go for it twice on fourth-and-two on the BSC 13- and 11-yard lines. Both would end in incompletions.

BSC would add one more score on a 30-yard rush to put the game out of reach with two minutes remaining

The Majors return home to face Rhodes for Homecoming next Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
