Women’s Soccer Uses Strong Defensive Effort to Keep Close with Centre and Sewanee

Millsaps Fell by a Combined 3-0 Score to SAA’s Current Top Two Teams in Standings

DANVILLE, Ky. & SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps women's soccer team was impressive defensively in a pair of close SAA road matches against the top two teams in the conference standings. Millsaps fell to Centre, 2-0 on Friday and held close at Sewanee, falling 1-0 on Sunday.

Match 1: at Centre (0-2)

Millsaps rising freshman goalkeeper Emily Lozano recorded seven saves to keep the Majors very much alive throughout the match at Amend Field.

Centre (12-2, 4-1 SAA) recorded one more foul (7-6) than the Majors, but featured nine shots on goal.

Tied 0-0 at halftime, the Colonels upped the pressure with 10 of their 12 corner kicks materializing after the break.

Centre broke the shutout bid with a goal in the 56th minute. A foul in the box then resulted in a Colonel penalty kick and goal in the 80th minute to put the game away at 2-0.

Match 2: at Sewanee (0-1)

Millsaps then faced Sewanee on Sunday in another tough test, but held strong throughout at Puett Field.

The match proved to be physical with the Majors tallying 11 of the 20 total fouls. The Tigers held a 9-2 corner kick edge and an 8-1 shots-on goal margin.

Lozano again registered an impressive seven-save performance. Fifth year Mary Ranager generated a shot attempt, while rising freshman Alexa Dubrow accumulated a shot on goal.

After a couple of Sewanee shots on target, Ranager fired a shot off to the right in an effort to score in the 24th minute. Dubrow then forced Sewanee to make a save 10 minutes later.

Lozano continued to hold the line defensively with three more saves before the Tigers finally broke through with a tally in the 65th minute.

Sewanee would continue their pressure for the remainder of the contest, but Millsaps kept the match at 1-0. The tying goal wouldn't arise as the Tigers escaped with a 1-0 victory.

The Majors will conclude their SAA regular-season schedule at Birmingham-Southern next Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com.
