JACKSON, Miss. – A stellar defensive effort by rising freshmen goalkeeper
Emily Lozano propelled the Millsaps women's soccer team to a 1-0 triumph against Belhaven inside the Belhaven Bowl Stadium on Tuesday.
Lozano posted a career-high 10-save shutout as the Majors bested the Blazers for the first time since 2014. Millsaps was able to withstand a 21-2 shot disadvantage, including a 10-1 difference in shots on goal. The Blazers and Majors were equally disciplined with five fouls each.
Junior
Beyla Bleichner tallied the Millsaps goal at the 30-minute mark, whle fifth year
Mary Ranager also provided a shot attempt.
Belhaven recorded the first shot on goal 11 minutes into the contest off a free kick from outside the box, but Lozano made her first save seem easy. Just five minutes later Belhaven threatened again as they launched a shot off the woodwork.
Millsaps would answer by depositing their first shot into the net. Senior
Riley Ely would kick the ball deep into the Blazer territory. She would then boot the ball in a sea of players in front of the goal and the ball would sail out wide.
Sophomore
Chloee Beebe would corral the loose ball and send it back in to classmate
Nicole Balduccini who flicked the ball with her left foot towards the goal. A block made the ball bounce at the right foot of Bleichner, who in one motion found the back of the net Millsaps to secure a 1-0 lead at the 30-minute mark. Bleichner would fall down, but would be helped up and mobbed by her teammates.
Less than five minutes later the Majors look poised to take a 2-0 advantage when Ranager sailed a shot over the top of the net.
Ranager's shot attempt would be the last for the Majors in the match, but the defense was up to the task. Lozano then posted a save in the final minute of the first half as Millsaps led 1-0 into the break.
Belhaven would provide immense pressure with eight shots on goal in the second half but again Lozano speared every chance out of harm's way.
The Blazer looked to tie the game in the 85th minute, but a sailing shot hit the bottom part of the crossbar and stayed out. The Majors defense would not buckle, however and fought off two more shots for the victory.
Millsaps will next compete in the SAA Tournament Quarterfinals. The Majors will travel to face top seed Sewanee on Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at gomajors.com.
