CLEVELAND, Miss. & MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Millsaps swimming and diving programs opened up their season with a pair of meets over the weekend. The Majors swam against NCAA DI Alabama men's team and NCAA DII Delta State on Friday and closed with a meet at Rhodes College on Saturday.
On Friday, several Majors and relay teams finished in the top three of their events. Graduate and 2022 national qualifier
Bryan Sullivan swam an impressive time of 21.04 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle to place second. His time already ranks second across DIII early for 2022-23 qualification.
The men's team of senior
Cooper Clevenger, freshman
Thad Erato, freshman
Kaiden Auzenne and junior
Casey Miller combined for a third-place finish in the men's 400-yard freestyle relay (3:46.81).
Millsaps also competed well in the relays on the women's side. In the same event, sophomore
Kat Burns, junior
Madisyn Latino, sophomore
Alexandra Raybourn and sophomore
Catherine Passarelli teamed up for a second-place finish (4:02.89). Behind them in third were freshmen
Lily Moore,
Abigail Hoffman, Zoe Cowell and junior
Ginny Ray Clevenger (4:20.63).
The quartet of Raybourn, Burns, Clevenger and Latino ended the 200-yard medley relay in second (2:01.98). Additionally, Moore, Cowell, Hoffman and Passarelli were third with a time of 2:11.48.
Individually the Majors finished second, third and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle. Latino swam a swift 26.59, Burns clocked 27.32 and Hoffman completed the event in 29.55.
A total of three Majors added second place finishes including Clevenger (100 fly – 1:07.63), Passarelli (500 free – 6:11.98), and Raybourn (200 back – 2:34.74). Posting a strong performance in the 200 backstroke was Moore (2:39.87; third).
On Saturday, the teams competed in a metered pool at Rhodes College. Sullivan took home victory in the 50-meter freestyle with a solid time of 24.16. Not far behind was freshman
Ben Anderson, who was third in the event in 25.47.
Anderson also showed well in the 100-meter free with a time of 56.41 for third place. Another Major to place in third in his event was Clevenger, who swam the 200-meter breaststroke in 3:30.86. Sullivan, Anderson, freshman
Andrew Meadows and Erato ended the 200-meter freestyle relay in second overall as well (1:44.51).
Showing well early in the 2022-23 campaign was Latino. She finished third in both the 100-meter free (1:06.78) and 50-meter free (30.07). Burns also completed the 50 free and ended the event in second (29.88).
The final swimmer to crack the top three was Passarelli, who paced herself to third position in the 400-meter freestyle (5:22.81).
Millsaps will return home for the next three meets. The first will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15 at GRIT Training in Flowood, Miss., against the University of Montevallo, beginning at 12 p.m.
