Women’s Basketball Battles in Defeat to No. 5 Trinity on Saturday

Haley Franklin Netted 16 Points, Seven Rebounds, Four Steals in 80-58 Loss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps women's basketball team battled, but came up short to a strong No. 5 Trinity (Texas) team, 80-58 inside the Bill Battle Coliseum on Saturday.

Sophomore Haley Franklin had an all-around strong game with 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Junior Helena Roe was also a force on both ends of the court with seven points and eight rebounds.

The Majors were stronger in the paint, holding a 34-26 advantage and outrebounded the Tigers 47-35. Trinity used a 27-16 edge on points-off turnovers after forcing Millsaps into 29 giveaways.

Facing a 17-8 deficit early in the first quarter, the Majors used a 6-0 run cut into the Tiger lead, punctuated by a Whitney Novak jumper.

Millsaps then shrunk the deficit to 34-26 heading into halftime on the strength of back-to-back Devan Caldwell layups right before intermission.

Trinity followed with a 29-19 scoring edge in the third quarter to begin pulling away and eventually secure an 80-58 win.

The Majors next will host their home opener against MUW on Wednesday with tip set for 6 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
