Women’s Basketball Storms Past MUW, 64-36 in Home Opener

Majors Hold Owls to 22 Percent Shooting on Wednesday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team powered past MUW in second home game of the season leading wire-to-wire in 64-36 win inside the Hangar Dome on Wednesday.

The Majors kept to their game plan in the first half despite a limited Owl offense. Millsaps held MUW to 22 percent shooting (11-of-50), while the Majors connected on 47.1 percent of their chances (24-of-51).

Midway into the first quarter junior DeZarae Stewart (eight points, four steals) grabbed the ball from her Owl opponent and tossed it ahead to Emily Adams, connecting on a smooth layup to make 10-0.

Junior Maddie Howell connected on a long-range three-pointer to build an early 15-0 advantage before MUW could get set.

Pushing their lead up to 19-8 was senior Devin Caldwell (six points, six rebounds), who wowed the crowd with a nifty spin move in front of the basket for the open layup.

Leading 31-17 heading into the  third quarter, shots were being knocked down from all parts of the court. Millsaps was especially lethal in the paint, outscoring MUW 36-8.

With the Owls attempting to claw their way back into the contest, Adams nailed a three-point shot to cap off a 8-0 run as Millsaps led 41-19.

Leading 59-26 at the end of the third quarter, the Majors continued to fight and keep their feet on the gas.

Sophomore Shelby Lundy sank the last Millsaps basket from long range with three minutes remaining. Classmate Haley Franklin added seven points and four assists as the Majors claimed a 64-36 victory in their home opener.

The Majors will next travel to face Schreiner University on the road in the UST Houston Tournament on Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m.
