COLUMBUS, Miss.
– Defense was on full display as the Millsaps women's basketball team shrink-wrapped MUW, 61-23 inside Pohl Gymnasium on Thursday.
Millsaps (9-2) led wire-to-wire and allowed the second fewest points since the 1998-99 season. The Majors held Birmingham-Southern to 22 points on Jan. 1, 2019. It was the eighth consecutive triumph for Millsaps matching a run of eight straight during the 2020-21 season.
Thursday's win marked the second over MUW this season and allowed the Majors to equal their win total from a season ago. Millsaps held the Owls to 19.6 percent (10-of-51), which is the lowest total since holding BSC to 17.3 percent in the aforementioned matchup.
MUW only made 2-of-22 shots from beyond the arc, while Millsaps was an efficient 42.3 percent from the field (22-of-52).
The Majors won the turnover battle (19-12) and utilized a 22-0 scoring run, which spanned the second and third quarters. A close 18-11 contest turned into a 40-11 rout.
Juniors
Maddie Howell and
DeZarae Stewart posted nine points each to propel a balanced scoring punch. Sophomore
Whitney Novak tallied eight points and four rebounds, while junior
Helena Roe was an all-around force (six points, seven rebounds, three steals, two assists).
