MUW Gets Past Baseball, 11-8 on Sunday

Millsaps Turns Focus to Conference Play as Majors Host Centre Next Weekend

JACKSON, Miss. – MUW got past the Millsaps baseball team, 11-8 at Twenty Field on Sunday.

Junior Sam Pitre finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, two runs and a walk to lead the comeback effort.

After the first three Owl batters reached base and a mound visit by assistant coach Mike Bolsinger, starter Jackson Hood worked his way out of the jam. He forced a popup and then a 6-4-3 double play.

The Majors would put runners on first and second in the bottom of the first, but MUW got out of the frame with a strikeout.

MUW would then plate the first run of the game in the second, scoring a runner from third on a wild pitch.

The Majors would answer by putting the first two runners on via a Pitre hit by pitch and Nathan Chilton walk. Chris Hart would find a spot in right field with two outs to score Pitre and tie the game at 1-1.

The Owls then retook the lead in the top of the third with runners on the corners. MUW was able to steal home when the Majors focused on trying to pick off the runner at first. The lead would grow to 3-1 when a ball found its way through the right side. A 4-6-3 double play would prevent further damage.

Mark Petkovsek Jr. and Avery Brock would record back-to-back hits to open the bottom of the third. Mason Little would work a long at bat before loading the bases with a hit by pitch. This would give Pitre the opportunity to score Petkovsek from third with a sacrifice fly to center field, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The Majors would score the game-tying run in fourth on an unusual play. Hart and Pelle would steal third and second, respectively. The W's throw would sail into left field, which would send Hart home. However, Pelle would be called out at third on the throw from the outfield.

MUW would burst for seven runs in the fifth to gain a 10-3 advantage. Petkovsek would then single and advance to second on a passed ball in the bottom of the frame. Pitre would power home Petkovsek with another RBI single.

Millsaps would threaten with runners on first and second in the sixth inning with two outs, but The W would stop the chance on a fielder's choice force out at third base. MUW would add another run in the seventh.

Brock would double and Little earned a walk after the stretch. Pitre would yet again power a ball through the middle, scoring Brock making it an 11-5 score.

The Majors would put the first three runners on base in the ninth. An error by the right fielder would bring home Pitre to push the deficit to 11-6. Joshua Laurent would score on a putout at first base and a bases loaded walk would bring home Sam Suggs for the final runs of the comeback effort.

Millsaps hosts Centre College to begin conference play next Saturday, March 5. The Majors will begin with a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available on gomajors.com.
