Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Centre

Junior Sam Pitre Powers Two Home Runs on Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps baseball junior Sam Pitre blasted two home runs to right field to highlight the Majors' doubleheader with the Centre Colonels. The Majors were victorious 13-5 in game one before falling 17-3 in the second game at Twenty Field on Saturday.

Game One: W, 13-5

The Majors (10-5, 1-1 SAA) had their third straight double-digit hit game with 16 and sixth of their last seven.

Bradley Pelle and Pitre both went yard for the Majors' second multi-homerun game of the season. Pitre also had a career-high four hits in five at-bats along with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Pelle (three RBIs and one run), Mason Little (three runs and two RBIs), Chris Hart (three runs) and David Abadessa (two runs) all had two hits apiece.

Sophomore ace Wil Wood earned his fourth win of the season with six strikeouts while only giving up six hits in six innings pitched.

The Majors got on the board first when Little would score on a throwing error after Pitre put the ball in play. Catcher Sam Suggs would then score Little when he blasted an RBI double to the center field fence. After getting all the way to third, Suggs increased the Majors' lead after scoring on a passed ball. Pelle would then put on the finishing touches of a dominant inning with an RBI single to take a 4-0 lead entering the third inning.

Little would tack on another run for the Majors with a wild pitch for the lone score of the third inning. The Colonels would cut into the lead with a two-RBI double in the top of the fourth, but Pelle would respond by blasting a two-RBI 360-foot homer to right center field to give the Majors a 7-2 advantage.

Centre would inch even closer as their deficit would only be 7-5 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Little would add insurance with a two-RBI single. Pitre would then open up the game when he crushed a three-run homer to the tennis courts over right field to make it a 12-5 game.

Senior outfielder Mark Petkovsek Jr. would extend the lead to 13-5 with an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the seventh. Relief pitchers Ryan Erwin and Conner Haynes would combine to keep the Centre hitters at bay to help preserve the game one victory.

Game Two (Seven Innings): L, 17-3

The Majors had two hits and both of them were home runs by Pitre and Hart.

The Colonels struck first with three runs in the first two innings.

It was a repeat for Pitre as he torched another home run to right field to make it a 3-1 game going into the third inning.

After a scoreless third for both teams, Centre would go on a 13-0 run before Hart would hammer his second homer run of the season. The Colonels would score one more time in the seventh to even the series at 1-1.

Millsaps will now host Centre in a rubber match for the series victory on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available on gomajors.com.
