LONGVIEW, Texas – Excellent pitching and late-game heroics were on display as the Millsaps baseball team collected a 3-2 victory and 2-1 series win at LeTourneau on Conrad-Vernon Field on Sunday.
Senior
Avery Brock (3.0 IP) and graduate
Ryan Erwin (6.0 IP) combined for 10 strikeouts against two walks. The duo kept the Yellowjackets scoreless for the first seven innings.
Freshman
Bradley Pelle and senior
Mark Petkovsek Jr. homered and tallied a pair of hits.
Chris Hart (Brandon, Miss.) added two hits and a walk.
The Majors advanced a runner to third in the first, fourth and fifth innings, but LeTourneau held tough. The best early opportunity came in the fourth when Petkovsek Jr. opened the inning with a double. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was thrown out at home two batters later.
LeTourneau was stifled even more offensively thanks to Brock and Erwin, who didn't allow a runner in scoring position through seven innings.
The stalemate was finally broken when Pelle crushed his first career homer in the eighth, putting Millsaps ahead, 1-0. The hosts answered with a solo shot of their own in the bottom frame to tie the contest at 1-1.
Millsaps got a spark in the top of the ninth with two outs when Brock, now at DH, singled to left center. Petkovsek Jr. then proceeded to electrify the Major dugout with a two-run blast, putting the Majors up 3-1.
The Yellowjackets wouldn't go quietly, however. Facing two outs, the opponents singled three consecutive times to cut the deficit to 3-2. A hit batter would then load the bases, but a force out at second base ended the game securing a Millsaps series triumph.
The Majors will now host the Millsaps Tournament and open a long stretch of home contests, first with LaGrange College on Friday, Feb. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. Live stats and video links will be available on the baseball schedule page at gomajors.com.
