Strong Second Quarter Powers Women’s Basketball to Senior Day Victory

Junior Forward Devan Caldwell Contributed a Season-High 17 Points in 55-45 Win

JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps women's basketball junior forward Devan Caldwell tallied a season-high 17 points in a 55-45 win over Centre College on Senior Day. Freshman guard Emily Adams was a wizard on the court as she tallied nine assists, which was more than Centre's whole team inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday afternoon.

Millsaps (9-12, 4-6 SAA) blitzed the Colonels 21-8 in the second frame and utilized the run to take control throughout the game as they led for over 38 minutes. The Majors also dominated Centre (8-14, 5-6 SAA) in the paint, outscoring their opponents 26-16.

The Majors came out with a plan as they raced out to a 9-2 lead. Trying to close the gap, the Colonels cut the deficit to 11-8 with just over a minute left in the first quarter. Answering Centre's mini run, junior guard Elecia Lartigue found Caldwell on a backdoor reverse layup to take a five-point lead into the second quarter.

Not letting up on the gas, Millsaps turned great defense into offense as Centre produced four turnovers in their first five possessions in the beginning of the second. As a result, Millsaps went on a 12-0 run and expanded their lead to 23-8 midway through the frame. The Majors' lead would grow to as much as 20 points and they would eventually take a commanding 34-16 lead into intermission.

In a competitive third quarter, Centre made up ground and hit a buzzer beating three to cut Millsaps' lead to 45-33 entering the final quarter. A three-pointer in transition for the Colonels brought them within single digits with 9:09 remaining. Millsaps responded with a layup by Adams, which sparked a quick 6-0 burst to push the lead back to 15.

With only one minute left and Millsaps up 53-43, Caldwell iced the game with a pull-up free throw line jumper. Centre would score one more layup, but the Majors would prevail on Senior Day by a score of 55-45.

The Majors will finish the regular season on a two-game road trip next weekend starting with Rhodes on Friday. Tip off in Memphis is set for 6 p.m. Live video and stats links are available on the women's basketball schedule page at gomajors.com.
