Baseball Splits Thrilling Doubleheader with Berry

Teams Split Pair of 7-6 Contests on Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team split a pair of exciting games in a doubleheader against Berry College. Junior catcher Sam Suggs blasted his first collegiate home run and freshman center fielder Bradley Pelle scored the winning run to preserve the Majors first win over Berry since March 2018 in game two at Twenty Field on Saturday.

Game One: L, 7-6

Mason Little
, Bradley Pelle and Sam Pitre notched two hits each in the opener. Avery Brock and Case Page both had two RBIs, while senior third baseman Chris Hart scored twice.

Junior ace Wil Wood struck out three batters while yielding six runs in 5.0 IP. Ryan Erwin threw 3.2 innings without giving up a run to go along with three strikeouts and two hits against.

Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, but the Vikings notched four runs in the top of the second. The Majors would get on the board in the third inning when junior catcher Sam Suggs blasted a solo homer to left field. Millsaps would then make it a 4-2 game when an RBI by Page assisted Little across the bases in the fourth.

Berry stretched their lead back out to four runs in the fifth after crossing two more base runners across home plate. In search of a comeback, a sacrifice fly by Brock scored Hart. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Page was hit-by-pitch and Dylan McFarland was walked to lessen the deficit to 6-5.

Berry would answer with one run in the top of the sixth, but the Majors would make it a one-score game once again when a Brock sacrifice fly to left field brought home Hart. Neither team would score again to for a final score of 7-6.

Game Two: W, 7-6 (8 inn.)

In a game that went to extra innings, Erwin once again was terrific on the mound as he received his fifth win of the season. He allowed no runs and one hit while striking out three batters in 3.0 IP.

Pelle scored twice while McFarland went 2-for-3. Freshman catcher Austin Arceneaux boasted a game-high two RBIs.

Berry (13-7, 4-1 SAA) raced out to a 4-0 advantage by the bottom of the third inning. McFarland and Hart would help cut the Vikings' lead in half by scoring two unearned runs. Berry would then respond and push their lead back up to four with two more runs scored in the top of the fifth.

Looking to rally one more, Millsaps (13-7, 3-2 SAA) found life in the bottom of the fifth when Josh Laurent was walked with the bases loaded. Arceneaux would then follow his teammate up with a two-RBI double to score Little and Brock. McFarland would put on the finishing touches of a strong fifth inning with an RBI-single to bring Laurent home and tie the game at 6-6.

Both teams' defenses were solid in the extra innings, but it proved to be Erwin's day when he was able to get out of a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the top of the eighth inning. A force play at home and an ensuing line out ended the Viking opportunity.

Down to the final out and Pelle in scoring position, he stole third and an errant throw by Berry's catcher in attempt to record the out would ultimately send Pelle home for the walk-off run.

Millsaps will now host Berry in a rubber match for the series victory on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available on gomajors.com.
