Baseball Bested in SAA Road Openers at No. 2 BSC on Saturday

Majors Conclude Three-Game Set at 1 p.m. on Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps baseball team fought valiantly but were downed in a doubleheader with No. 2 Birmingham Southern on Saturday. Millsaps dropped game one, 10-4 and game two, 9-7 at Striplin Field.

Game One: L, 10-4

Junior outfielder Sam Pitre notched two RBIs and a hit in game one. Junior ace Wil Wood was exceptional on the mound as he struck out four batters and only gave up two earned runs in 6.0 innings.

Millsaps (13-11, 3-5 SAA) took the early advantage when a Mason Little RBI-single scored Bradley Pelle to give the Majors a 1-0 lead. BSC answered with a run of their own to tie the game.

Millsaps would once again reclaim the lead when an RBI from Chris Hart boosted Case Page across home plate, but the Panthers once again knotted up the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the second inning.

Dominate pitching for both teams would stymie the bats until the Majors claimed a 4-2 advantage with a bases-loaded RBI double from Sam Pitre to score Avery Brock and Mark Petkovsek.

BSC (17-5, 6-2 SAA) would notch one run each in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game for the third time at 4-4. They would then claim their first lead of the game with a two-run homer to take a 6-4 edge in the bottom of the seventh inning. Finding a groove in their offense, the Panthers scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the final tallies of the game.

Game Two (Seven Innings): L, 9-7 (7 innings)

BSC raced out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Panther advantage would reach 8-0 highlighted by a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.

Millsaps would get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning via an RBI by Hart to send Little home. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Page and Pelle exhibited patience at the plate and were both walked to score Pitre and Little to make it an 8-3 game.

The Panthers scored one run in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 9-3. Down to their final three outs in the top of the seventh, Millsaps would come roaring back with four runs to make it a 9-7 game. The Panthers would ultimately survive the scoring barrage and hold on to the victory.

Millsaps will now play BSC in game three of the series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available on gomajors.com.
