JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team came alive to secure their first series win over Centre since 2018 as five different Majors tallied multiple hits in a 15-5 win in eight innings on Sunday. Junior outfielder
Sam Pitre hit his third home run of the weekend at Twenty Field.
Pitre is the first Major to hit multiple home runs in a series since
Brennan Ducote did so in March 2019 against Rhodes. The left fielder has now bettered that mark by one game.
Grad senior
Avery Brock tallied a career-high five RBIs while Pitre totaled a season-high four RBIs (three hits).
The Colonels scored the first run in the top of the second inning. After the Majors were unable to match Centre in the bottom of the second, they used a beautiful 3-6-1 double play to immediately have another shot at the plate.
Millsaps would ultimately capitalize and tie the game when
Mark Petkovsek Jr. powered a ball off the center field fence to score Hart. They would then claim their first lead of the game when
Bradley Pelle scored off a fielder's choice RBI from Brock. Later in the inning, Pitre would continue his hot hitting weekend with an RBI single to help Brock cross the plate. The Majors would then score their fourth run of the inning when a sacrifice fly by
Nathan Chilton helped Little round the bases.
Millsaps increased their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth when
David Abadessa and
Chris Hart both scored on sacrifice flys.
The Colonels posted two runs in the top of the fifth to cut their deficit to 6-3, but Pitre and Chilton would score on errors from the Colonels' infield to push their lead back to five runs in the bottom of the frame.
Centre would once again close the gap to three runs as they knocked in two runs in the top of the eighth inning. The Majors would respond once again by loading the bases as Brock would add insurance as he cleared the bases with a standup double. Pitre would then add to the offensive explosion with a three-run homer.
Abadessa would then put on the finishing touches with a walk-off RBI to put the 10-run rule in effect for a final score of 15-5.
Millsaps will next travel to Shreveport to take on Centenary College on Wednesday, March 9. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available on gomajors.com.
