JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's and women's tennis programs posted successful home openers as they won all four matches against Huntingdon and Belhaven on Saturday. The men's team beat Huntingdon 9-0 and Belhaven 5-4, while the women bested Huntingdon 7-2 and Belhaven 9-0 on the Coach Montgomery Courts.
The teams of Vaccaro/Jackson and St. Martin/Willard earned their first wins of the season against Huntingdon. In their first match as a duo,
Jakub Bobinski and
Kells Hecht were also victorious. In singles action, Bobinski shined on Court 3 as he won in straight sets. Only one opposing player earned over two wins in a single game as the Majors dominated.
Men's tennis then found themselves behind early against Belhaven as the Blazers claimed two out of three victories in doubles action, with Bobinski and Hecht earning a perfect 8-0 decision.
Belhaven won the first singles match on Court 1, but a straight-set victory by
Hamilton Jackson and a win by Bobinski put Millsaps right back into contention. The Blazers preserved another victory on Court 4 to take a 4-3 advantage. The men's team would then answer the call with Hecht and
Luke Seelman winning three of the last four games in straight sets for the 5-4 win against their crosstown foes.
With a 7-2 victory to begin the day, the women's team was impressive against Huntingdon. After losing the first doubles match, the first-time tandem of
Sarah Hayek and
Mary Dabadie were victorious on Court 2 with an 8-5 win. Also partnering for the first time,
Isabella Hutchins and
Camille Landry would then follow up their performance with a stifling 8-0 triumph to take a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
The Hawks would win the first match on Court 1, but the women's team would take control and not lose another set against the Hawks.
Millsaps would then dominate Belhaven for a 9-0 decision. Highlighting the doubles action,
Mackenzie Vordick and
Segen Lister teamed up for the first time and claimed an outstanding straight-set victory.
In singles action, the best match of the series was on Court 1 when
Camille Fremaux outlasted her opponent in a 6-4, 7-5 marathon. The next five matches would feature all Majors winning at least one of their games in a straight set.
Millsaps will now travel to compete at Spring Break Tennis in Orlando, Fla., March 13-17.
