ATLANTA – A historic start to conference play by Millsaps baseball junior left fielder
Sam Pitre was strong enough to earn him Southern Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Week recognition, as voted on by conference sports information directors on Monday.
Pitre finished the weekend 8-for-11 with three home runs total in three games. He became the first Major to homer in three consecutive contests during the SAA era. Pitre also totaled eight RBIs, five runs and one walk as Millsaps won two of three over Centre.
Millsaps joined the SAA upon its creation beginning with the 2013 season. Only a handful of Majors have homered in back-to-back games, yet along three straight.
In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Pitre went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a homer. He followed that performance with another home run, a run scored and RBI in game two. He then polished off his weekend with four RBIs, three hits, two runs scored and another home run on Sunday.
Last season, Pitre earned a spot on the D3baseball.com All-South Region Third Team and was also named the SAA Baseball Player of the Week on April 13 following a big Senior Day weekend.
Up next, the Majors will travel to Centenary College for a Wednesday clash and then host MUW on Thursday. Both games are slated to start at 4 p.m. with live stats and video available at gomajors.com.
