MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It was a sensational day on the track and across the field for the Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet. Freshman multi-event athlete
Natalie Burke set the program record in the triple jump as the Majors totaled seven top-5 school marks on Crain Field, Friday.
Burke was terrific throughout soaring in the triple jump with a distance of 10.64 meters (fourth place, 34.91 feet). She bettered the previous mark of 10.41m set by Essence Davis in 2018.
The Vicksburg, Miss., native also recorded the second-furthest long jump in program history at 5.22m, just 0.3 meters off the top mark. Additionally, Burke finished with the fifth fastest 100m dash time of 12.94 seconds. She rounded out her afternoon with a swift 26.96 at 200m.
The distance team also made their impact on Friday. Senior
Rose Ward ran a jaw-dropping 18:57.30 in the 5K, which was the second quickest ever in the Millsaps record books. Ward's time was only four seconds off the all-time record set by current teammate
Abby Tew.
Freshman
Sarah Strickland, who owns the second-best time already in the 1500m, ran 5:09.56 in Memphis. Just behind her was senior
Isabel Baird, becoming the fourth swiftest individual in the event with a time of 5:12.18.
Junior
Khloe Colar also put her stamp on the meet. She became the second-best runner in the 100m hurdles crossing the line in 18.38.
Other strong performances included
Carolina Teague (400m, 1:03.50), Colar (400m hurdles, 1:18.09), Baird (800m, 2:30.13),
Clare Howard (800m, 2:31.06), Ward (1500m, 5:17.30) and Strickland (5000m, 19:55).
The men's program was strong as well at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet. Junior
William Weber crushed it in the pole vault, clearing 4.15 meters – the second-highest mark in Millsaps history.
Senior
Storm Buescher also tied his personal best and school record in the high jump with a leap of 2.00m to finish second on the day.
Junior
Christopher Butler recorded a solid bound in the long jump, covering 6.96 meters to finish second on Friday.
In the 800m, both
Patrick Elliott (2:00.35, eighth) and
Worth Wilsey (2:03.11, 10th) finished in the top 10. Elliott was also sixth in the 1500m with a swift 4:04.52.
Other top-10 finishes included
Sergey Kolesnik (200m, 23.30),
Dez'Tavian Frank (400m, 51.68),
Otis Kenner (400m hurdles, 1:06.87),
Ryan Skates (3000m steeplechase, 11:48.56),
Jakob Myers-Heldt (javelin, 37.88m) and Weber (javelin, 33.86m).
Landry Lemoine also finished 14th in the 5K at 16:04.01, while the 4x100-meter relay of Butler,
MoÏse Tezzo, Frank and Kolesnik ended the meet in fourth at 43.23 seconds.
The Majors' next scheduled meet is the SAA Track & Field Championships set for April 29-30 in Mount Berry, Ga.
