ATLANTA – The Millsaps baseball team split a SAA road doubleheader against Oglethorpe at Hermance Stadium on Saturday. The Stormy Petrels claimed game one, 9-5, while the Majors responded with a 6-3 win in game two.
Game One: L, 9-5
Freshman center fielder
Bradley Pelle (one run) and sophomore designated hitter
Case Page (one RBI) both tallied two hits in the opening game on Saturday.
Oglethorpe jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first inning and used that cushion to keep Millsaps at bay in the opener.
The Majors would score in the second inning when freshman catcher
Austin Arceneaux used a sacrifice fly to plate
Sam Pitre.
The Stormy Petrels would add to their lead with a run in their half of the second and third innings. Millsaps would get those two runs back in the sixth when a fielding error brought home
Mark Petkovsek Jr. and Page singled to score
Mason Little.
Senior
Chris Hart launched his fifth home run of the season to score in the seventh. Oglethorpe would respond with two additional tallies in the bottom of the seventh.
Millsaps would score once more in the ninth when
Avery Brock brought home Pelle on a sacrifice fly. Oglethorpe would hold on from there to earn a 9-5 win.
Game Two: W, 6-3 (7 inn.)
The script would flip in game two as the Majors would jump ahead with a 4-0 lead through two innings. Junior pitcher
Wil Wood (5-2) was strong in 6.0 IP, striking out two batters and only surrendering one run for Millsaps (14-14, 4-7 SAA).
Graduate relief pitcher
Ryan Erwin earned his fourth save of the season with one strikeout in the seventh. Hart, Pitre and
Sam Suggs recorded two hits each as the Majors combined for 10 as a team.
Hart set the tone with a leadoff triple down the left-field line. Pelle would score Hart with a single and then score himself after a wild pitch, passed ball and Brock sacrifice fly. Pitre would then notch his fourth homer of 2022 to extend the Major lead to 3-0.
Hart would then lead off the fifth with a single and reach third with a passed ball and ground out. Petkovsek would bring home his teammate with a sacrifice fly.
Oglethorpe (12-14, 5-6 SAA) would claw back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Pitre would provide insurance in the sixth with a leadoff single and steal of second base. A Little double down the right-field line to score Pitre provided the final tally of the game.
Erwin shut the door in the seventh for the 6-3 triumph in game two.
The series finale will double as the rubber match on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CT with live video and live stats available on gomajors.com.
