BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Millsaps softball sophomore right fielder
Katie Norris tallied two RBIs and forced a walk-off error as the Majors bested No. 6 seed Sewanee in the opening game of the SAA Softball Tournament at the BSC Softball Park on Friday.
Millsaps (18-21), who entered the field as the No. 3 seed, were also powered by sophomore
Molli Perry and junior
Magen Authement, who both tallied two hits.
Junior
Delta Claire Newman pitched 4.2 solid innings, yielding two runs, seven hits and two walks. In need of some relief in a close game, senior
Hayleigh Rogers shut the door with 2.1 innings pitched, surrendering just one hit and no walks.
Sewanee (7-25) struck first with RBI-singles in the second and fifth innings for a 2-0 advantage. The Majors would respond in the bottom of the fifth when Norris found a hole in left center to score Authement and
Valirea Sentelle to knot the game up at 2-2.
Dominant pitching from Rogers and stifling defense by the Majors in the final two innings gave them a chance to put the game away in the bottom of the seventh. With no outs and two runners in scoring position, Norris would sky a ball to right field where the defender would misplay it to send
Camille Black striding home for the 3-2 walk-off error victory.
Millsaps now faces the host No. 2 seed and No. 9 nationally ranked BSC for the right to earn an automatic spot in the pod championship. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at gomajors.com.
