JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team was downed by Belhaven, 29-13 in an offensive slugfest during game three of the Cowboy Maloney Series at Twenty Field on Tuesday.
The Majors totaled four home runs, including two by
Avery Brock (3-for-4, three runs, three RBIs) but couldn't keep up with Blazer third baseman Nathan Herron, who posted three homers. Fifth-year senior
Mason Little (2-for-4) homered, added two runs and three RBIs. Additionally, freshman
Bradley Pelle garnered his third home run of the season.
Belhaven (16-11) would open the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run to right-center field. The Blazers would put a runner on third, but the Majors would leave the inning just down 1-0.
Millsaps (14-16) would soon respond by taking the lead in the second inning. Sophomore
David Abbadessa would find a hole up the middle to score
Avery Brock and
Sam Pitre. Pitre would race around third and elude the tag at home with a limbo-like slide.
The Blazers smoked a pitch to the center-field wall to tie the game at 2-2 in the third frame and would eventually build an 9-2 advantage with an eight-run inning.
Sophomore designated hitter
Case Page would reach with a double and teammate Brock would crush a ball over the right-center wall to tally a two-run home run, cutting the deficit to 9-4.
Belhaven would add another run in the fifth, but Pelle would answer by posting his home run to keep the distance at five runs. The Majors would threaten with a double steal of second and third with two outs, but the Blazers would escape the inning.
The visitors would tack on four runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh. Millsaps added four runs in the bottom of the seventh when Brock hit his second homer of the game with a leadoff shot to left field. Little would proceed to launch a three-run homer.
The Blazers scored eight more runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, while posted four over the final two innings for the final 29-13 explosive, offensive series finale.
Millsaps will return to SAA play and remain at home to host Rhodes for a three-game set. A doubleheader on Saturday will begin at 1 p.m. Live video and live stats are available on gomajors.com.
