Tyler finished his career by coaching the Majors for three seasons from 2000-02. The Majors amassed a 14-15 overall record. During his tenure, Millsaps claimed two victories over Mississippi College in the "Backyard Brawl." The 2000 victory saw the return of the series after a 41-year hiatus in front of 10,200 fans at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Tyler also guided Matt O'Bryant to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2001 and 2002 as well as becoming a Hewlett-Packard All-American in 2002. Additionally, Tyler oversaw 38 SCAC All-Conference selections, including 10 First Team members.
A native of Water Valley, Miss., Tyler began his career as a high school coach making stops at Okolona, Senatobia, Meridian and Corinth. He holds a 94-19-6 all-time record across the Magnolia State.
He transitioned to the college ranks by first serving under Johnny Vaught at Ole Miss as the receivers coach (1968-1970). Tyler then spent the next season assisting Bear Bryant at Alabama (1971) before becoming the offensive coordinator at Mississippi State in 1972.
Tyler became the head coach of the Bulldogs from 1973-78. The highlight of his tenure featured a triumph in the 1974 Sun Bowl and 9-3 record. MSU finished No. 17 in both the Coaches and AP Polls that season. He coached at North Texas in 1981 as well. While at both stops, Tyler also served as the Athletic Director at MSU (1976-79) and North Texas (1981-82).
The University of Mississippi graduate took home numerous Coach of the Year awards at both the high school and collegiate levels.
Tyler becomes the 22nd member associated with Millsaps College and seventh head football coach to be enshrined in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. A complete list of inductees is included below.
The Millsaps football program will celebrate its rich history as it prepares to compete in its 100th NCAA intercollegiate season, beginning in September. The 2022 centennial season kicks off Sept. 1 against Belhaven University at Harper Davis Field.
