JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's soccer team won its second consecutive match with an excellent 3-0 performance while hosting Tougaloo College at Harper Davis Field on Sunday.
Freshman
Sam Cagle and senior
Kaleb Newton scored, while junior
Jacks Dowdy tallied a goal and an assist. Freshman goalkeepers
Michael Hamauei and
Jack Maloney both tallied two saves each in a half of work.
Millsaps outshot Tougaloo, 28-10 (16-4 on-target). The Majors dominated corner opportunities, recording a 9-0 advantage.
A back-and-forth first few moments saw the Majors record four shot attempts and breakthrough in the 19th minute on the scoreboard. Off a throw-in, Dowdy deflected the ball to an open Cagle. Cagle then buried the ball for his first career goal.
Dowdy was then fouled in the opening two minutes of the second half in the penalty box. However, his shot was just off target as the game remained 1-0.
In the 56th minute, Dowdy would respond with a goal off a nice pass up the middle from junior
Brandon Benn.
Less than five minutes later, Newton scored his first career goal off a feed by freshman
Jacob Romero to push the Major advantage to 3-0.
The teams would trade shot attempts the remainder of the match, but nothing threatened the Millsaps goal thanks to quality position play in the closing minutes.
Millsaps will now travel to Blue Mountain College for a midweek matchup on Tuesday. The match will begin at 4 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
