JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's and women's swimming and diving teams look to build off last season's momentum as the Majors enter Year 4 in program history. A majority of the teams return, which combined to set 14 school records in the 2022 conference meet alone.
The men's program returns four of five swimmers from last season and welcome in six newcomers.
Graduate
Bryan Sullivan returns after becoming the first NCAA Qualifier in program history. He competed in three events, including the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. Sullivan claimed conference titles in all three events as well.
Sullivan was named the 2021-22 SAA Men's Swimmer of the Year, SAA Men's Co-Newcomer of the Year and Paul Benton Award Winner, which recognizes the top male student-athlete at Millsaps.
The Jackson Prep product also set four SAA open meet records (50 free, 100 back, 100 fly, 100 IM), eclipsed three SAA conference meet records (50 free, 100 back, 100 IM) and helped establish 12 program records.
Senior
Cooper Clevenger returns as the school record holder in the 200 fly and 1000 freestyle as well as junior
Breydon Conner, who holds the 200 backstroke record. Additionally, junior
Casey Miller is back after helping the Majors set three relay high water marks.
On the women's side, the Majors set a remarkable 12 school records at the SAA Championships. Fans should be excited because nine of 11 swimmers return with the addition of three rising freshmen.
Every single individual and relay school record is represented with key returners. Sophomore
Kat Burns posted a terrific opening season having set five top marks (50 free, 100 free, 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast).
Matching Burns with five records is senior
Olivia Baldwin (50 back, 50 fly, 100 fly, 100 IM, 200 IM).
A pair of swimmers also look to improve following four and three records set thus far, respectively. Junior
Ginny Ray Clevenger (100 back, 200 back, 200 fly, 400 IM) shows strength at multiple distances. The clear top returning distance swimmer is sophomore
Catherine Passarelli who holds top times in the 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free.
Junior
Madisyn Latino holds the final individual program best in the 200 free. Additionally, all six relay records were broken at the conference meet and should be challenged again this season.
The Majors open the season on Friday, Sept. 30 at Delta State, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Millsaps will then travel to Rhodes on Oct. 1 before hosting three meets at GRIT Training in Flowood, Miss., on Oct. 15, Oct. 22 and Nov. 5.
Birmingham-Southern will again host the SAA Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled for Feb. 8-11. The nation's best swimmers will then gather for the NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, N.C., March 15-18.
