JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team made a fourth-quarter push, but came up short against Centre, 57-52 inside the Hangar Dome on Friday.
The visitors barely outshot the Majors from the field., 33.9 percent to 33.3 percent. However, Centre (12-5, 6-0 SAA) made eight three-pointers to Millsaps' one long-range make. The long-range success proved to be the difference down the stretch.
Millsaps (12-5, 3-3 SAA) did dominate in the paint (36-16) and outscored the Colonels' bench (26-9).
Sophomore
Haley Franklin (15 points, seven rebounds, four steals) and freshman
Elyse Warren (13 points, seven rebounds) sizzled offensively.
Senior
Devin Caldwell (four rebounds) started the game off strong for the Majors by posting a layup to put the Majors on the board first.
Centre would then outscore the hosts, 18-10 in the second quarter to build a 30-21 advantage at halftime. The Colonels then led 41-28 through three quarters. However, Millsaps fought back into the game.
The Majors posted a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to three points, trailing 43-40 with 4:36 to play. Warren stepped up in clutch moments and punctuated the rally.
Millsaps tried to get closer, but Centre was not going down without a fight as they as they knocked down back-to-back three-pointers. The Colonels' advantage would grow to 51-42 with 2:28 to play and they would hold on for a 57-52 victory.
