JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team was lethal from all areas of the court to down Sewanee, 93-73 inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.
The Majors shot 47. 2 percent from the floor (34-of-72) and 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the free-throw line. Millsaps outscored the Tiger bench (37-16), controlled the paint (50-30), won the fast-break battle (17-4) and were efficient with points off turnovers (19-3).
Sunday's matchup featured four ties and 10 lead changes, while Millsaps scored the most points in a game since the 2020 season.
Freshman
Dakota Gasca (19 points, seven rebounds, three assists) had a tremendous field day scoring from long range and inside. Senior
Doug Watson was effective as a leader with 17 points and four rebounds.
Youth was also a dominant force as sophomore
Drew Roth (10 points, six rebounds) along with freshmen
Stewart Bonnecaze (14 points) and
Rodney Phillips Jr. (12 points, four rebounds) all stepped up.
The Majors jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the first half swung back and forth with Millsaps holding a narrow 39-38 lead at intermission.
Millsaps began to pull away in the second half when they connected on 50 percent of its three-point opportunities (5-of-10). Sewanee (12-6, 5-2 SAA) was held to 20 percent from long range (3-of-15) after the break.
The separation would emerge following a 10-0 Major run to go ahead 53-44 with just under 14 minutes remaining. Millsaps' lead would grow to as many as 21 points following a pair of Watson free throws with two minutes remaining.
The Majors would finish with a 93-73 victory and secure their second consecutive conference dub.
