Men’s Basketball Extinguishes Blazers for Season Sweep on Tuesday

Majors Heat Up from Long Range for Third Straight Win in 79-68 Triumph

JACKSON, Miss. – An electric atmosphere powered the Millsaps men's basketball team to a season sweep of Belhaven in front of 355 fans inside the Hangar Dome on Tuesday. The Majors downed the Blazers with a 79-68 triumph for the team's third consecutive victory.

Millsaps (4-13) dominated the boards, which showcased itself with a 47-31 rebounding advantage and 36-16 points in the paint barrage.

Belhaven (9-8) was also outscored in bench points (25-10) and second-chance opportunities (17-4). The Majors forced 20 turnovers resulting in 15 points. Millsaps also shot 37 percent from three-point range (10-of-27).

Freshman Dakota Gasca was solid again with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. Classmate Stewart Bonnecaze (12 rebounds, four assists, two steals) turned into a dominant force all evening against the Blazers. The rising freshman was tremendous grabbing a career high in total boards.

The Majors started off the game slowly, trailing 26-12 midway through the opening half but were able to come alive in the closing 10 minutes of the first frame. Junior Aaron Ursin (10 points, six rebounds) and senior Doug Watson (22 points) were key contributors in allowing Millsaps to battle back in the contest and pull away later in the game.

Junior Seth Stephen punctuated a 16-0 run with a putback dunk and layup, giving the Majors a 34-28 advantage. Belhaven would claw back ahead at 40-39 going into the halftime.

Keeping his hot streak from the first half, Watson completed a beautiful spin move to make the crowd come alive with Millsaps out front 56-53 with 11:45 left in the second.

Senior Rodreekas Bush provided a clutch three-point make midway through the half when Belhaven continued to battle back, pushing Millsaps ahead 61-56.

Ursin with his back to the hoop, spun masterfully to complete a nifty finger roll. The make made it a 65-58 contest with eight minutes on the clock.

TJ Hogan and Gasca then provided back-to-back daggers from long range to push Millsaps ahead 73-64 with less than three minutes to go. The Majors coasted the rest of the way for the 79-68 win.
