DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps women's basketball team was unable to hold off Centre late in the fourth quarter, falling 59-55 inside Alumni Gymnasium on Friday.
Sophomore
Haley Franklin totaled 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. Freshman
Elyse Warren (eight points, four rebounds) and senior
Meagan Bickmann (six points two steals) were also key contributors for the Majors.
Millsaps (13-6, 4-4 SAA) outshot the Colonels 44.4 percent (20-of-45) to 38.2 percent (21-of-55). The Majors also added points in the paint (30-22) and tallied more bench points (21-13). However, Centre (14-5, 8-0 SAA) outrebounded the Majors, 36-21.
Millsaps did hold the Colonels to 13.3 percent from the floor in the second quarter and outscored the hosts by an impressive 21-4 margin. Centre was held scoreless for 9 minutes and 22 seconds, and until 45 seconds left in the half.
Millsaps held a narrow 42-38 lead entering the fourth quarter. Franklin would convert an impressive and-one opportunity, which was followed moments later by a Bickmann three-pointer to make it 50-45 game with 7:14 to play.
Centre would methodically chip into the deficit and lead themselves, 55-52 with just under three minutes left. Senior
Devan Caldwell would find Warren down low for a big layup on the very next possession.
The Colonels answered with a layup before Franklin added a free throw, making it a 57-55 Centre advantage with 51 seconds on the clock.
Centre corralled the second free throw, killed a large portion of the remaining clock and would add a pair of free throws with four seconds to go, which resulted in the final 59-55 tally.
Millsaps will be back in action as the team travels to Sewanee on Sunday, with first tip at 1 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
