Women’s Basketball Unable to Overcome Early Deficit at Sewanee on Sunday

Haley Franklin Tallies 34 Points, Fifth 30-Point Game of Season in 66-63 Defeat

SEWANEE, Tenn. A strong second-half offensive performance wasn't enough for the Millsaps women's basketball program to overcome an early deficit, falling 66-63 to Sewanee inside the Juhan Gymnasium on Sunday.

Sophomore Haley Franklin recorded her fifth 30-point point effort of the season. She totaled 34 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Freshman Elyse Warren also tallied her second double-double in three games, with 12 points and 12 rebounds in only 13 minutes of action. Sophomore Emily Adams added a career-high six steals.

Millsaps (13-7, 4-5 SAA) dominated the paint with a 40-10 point advantage down low and outscored the Tigers on fast breaks (15-6). The Majors shot 41.8 percent in the second half (18-of-43) and held a 44-32 scoring mark after intermission.

Early on, Sewanee kept the Majors out of rhythm offensively and held a 21-6 advantage after the first quarter. The lead would grow to 20 points, but Warren and Franklin would spark a 9-0 scoring run to begin the comeback bid.

Trailing 34-19 at the start of the third quarter, sophomore Whitney Novak (six points, 6 rebounds) sank a jumper to put the Majors back into the game following another strong rally. Sewanee was forced to call a timeout with 7:06 remaining in the third quarter, clinging to a 36-30 edge.

The teams would trade basket after basket from then on. Franklin would become a literal driving force with 16 points in the final quarter. She tallied a layup with 2:05 remaining, cutting the deficit to 58-57.

Both squads would trade several free throws before Novak and Helena Roe posted back-to-back layups making it a 66-63 Sewanee advantage with 50 seconds on the clock. The Majors would have a couple more shot opportunities, but both came up short as the Tigers escaped with a 66-63 win.

Millsaps will next travel to challenge Berry on Friday, beginning at 5 p.m. CT. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
