SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps men's basketball team was unable to keep up with an offensive flurry in the second half, falling 97-71 at Sewanee inside Juhan Gymnasium on Sunday.
Senior
Doug Watson posted 19 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal. Freshman
Stewart Bonnecaze had another all-around strong effort with 11 points, seven rebounds, four steals and an assist.
Additionally, freshman
Dakota Gasca (10 points, two rebounds, two assists) and junior
Aaron Ursin (nine points, four rebounds, two blocks) had good games.
Millsaps claimed the contest's first basket with an Ursin hook shot and led as late as 8-7 following a Watson jumper.
The teams would be tied at 10-10 and 17-17, but Sewanee would provide separation and lead 42-29 with two minutes remaining in the first half. Ursin would answer with another hook shot,
Rodney Phillips Jr. added a layup and Bonnecaze provided a steal and score on the ensuing inbounds play. The resulting scoring run made it 42-35, with Sewanee out front at intermission.
A pair of Watson free throws and a
Seth Stephen layup cut into the deficit midway through the second half, which saw Millsaps fighting back down 65-51.
Sewanee would answer with an impressive 16-0 burst to put the game out of reach. The teams would trade free throws and field goals, but the Tigers would hold the Majors off for a 97-71 decision.
