MT. BERRY, Ga. – The Millsaps women's basketball team overcame an early deficit and methodically battled their way back to victory by downing Berry, 71-67 inside the Cage Center on Friday.
Sophomore
Haley Franklin (20 points, seven rebounds, four assists three steals) posted her eighth 20-point game of the season in another all-around, dominant effort.
Freshman
Elyse Warren reached double figures in scoring for the fifth time in six games with 14 points and five rebounds on 6-of-7 from the floor. Junior
Helena Roe added a career high four blocks, while sophomore
Whitney Novak chipped in eight points and six boards.
Millsaps (14-7, 5-5 SAA) dominated with a 40-16 points in the paint advantage and outpaced the Vikings, 9-2 on the fast break.
Berry (12-9, 5-5 SAA) was unable to keep up with the Majors' depth, resulting in a 29-12 bench point deficit. Millsaps also outshot the Vikings 46.9 percent (23-of-49) to 39 percent (23-of-59).
The Vikings came out of the gates strong to grab an 8-0 margin in the opening minutes. Transitioning into the second quarter the Majors would claw their way back into the game with a following layup from junior
DeZarae Stewart to cut into the Vikings' lead at 30-26 with 5:46 remaining in the half. Senior
Emily Sims would punctuate a 9-0 run with a three-point shot, making it a 30-29 deficit moments later.
Franklin came alive in the second half, totaling 18 of her 20 points after intermission. A back-and-forth third quarter saw the Majors take a 45-42 advantage following a 10-2 burst. Berry would answer to lead 50-49 with 10 minutes to play.
Down 54-49 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Millsaps would rally with the next 11 points highlighted by a senior
Devan Caldwell and-one conversion.
Sophomore
Emily Adams would find an open Warren cutting to the hoop for a crucial layup, pushing Millsaps ahead 62-59 with 3:42 to play.
Franklin would then add back-to-back jumpers for the Majors and willing Millsaps out front, 66-62 with just over two minutes on the clock. The Vikings would add a free throw and have a chance to tie, but would miss a critical three-pointer with 36 seconds left.
Roe and Franklin would combine for six free throws to ice the game and power the Majors to a 71-67 road triumph. The win helped the team move up from fifth to third in the closely contested SAA standings.
