JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team fought to the wire, but fell short to conference foe Oglethorpe, 76-64 in the Hangar Dome on Sunday.
The teams traded the lead 11 times in the first half and finished with 30 bench points each. Senior starting guard
Doug Watson netted 17 points and six rebounds, while freshman
Mack Gorton totaled nine points in reserve.
Oglethorpe (6-8, 1-2 SAA) was efficient from the floor at 44.3 percent (27-of-61) to help the Stormy Petrels pull away late in the second half.
Junior
Aaron Ursin put the game on notice scoring the first bucket for the Majors. Watson and Gorton hit back-to-back treys later in the half to give Millsaps its largest lead of the game at 21-12.
With 5:21 remaining in the first half, the Stormy Petrels regained a narrow 26-25 edge after leading 3-2 early on. The teams would trade baskets as Oglethorpe found itself out front, 42-38 at intermission.
The Stormy Petrels would never trail in the second half, but the Majors would pull within one and two points, respectively on two separate occasions following three-pointers. Junior
James Little made it 54-53 with 11 minutes to play and Watson pushed Millsaps to 62-60 with just under seven minutes to play.
Oglethorpe ended the game on a 14-4 run to put the game out of reach and earn a 76-64 win.
