Evenly Matched Women’s Soccer Riverside Derby Goes to Belhaven

Ally Hearn Scores as Majors Fall in Tough, 2-1 Battle on Tuesday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's soccer team dueled Belhaven University in an intense Riverside Derby, which saw the Blazers claim a 2-1 win at Harper Davis Field on Tuesday.

Sophomore Ally Hearn netted her first collegiate goal in the second half as Belhaven used a late penalty kick goal to pull out a hard-fought win. Classmate Emily Lozano tallied six saves and graduate Mary Ranager generated five shot attempts.

Both schools combined for 32 shot attempts, with Belhaven holding a slim 18-14 advantage.

The first ten minutes of the game saw lots of action. The Majors had two shots, one of which was saved by Belhaven keeper Julianne Wilson, and Belhaven had three shots, with Lozano saving one.

Belhaven managed to score early soon after with Emma Antonoplos scoring in the 12th minute off a pinballing opportunity.

The remainder of the first half was a defensive showdown. Lozano would get three more saves during this period. The Majors would register two more shots, one by freshman Alex Bremond and Ranager, both of which were off frame.

The Majors equalized in the 61st minute. Hearn scored a looping shot over the head of the Belhaven keeper from beyond the penalty box. Junior Lily Butcher was credited with an assist after driving toward the net and the ball rolling out to Hearn's foot.

The next twenty minutes saw both teams generating shots and Millsaps stopped a chance with a team save labeled for the back of the net in the 67th minute. It wasn't until the 81st minute that the next and ultimately final goal came. Kaci Craft scored the deciding goal on a penalty kick after a teammate was tripped down in the box.

The Majors would get three more opportunities to score but none found the back of the net, with one being saved with a miraculous leap by keeper Wilson. Fifth year Riley Ely fired a shot high, but Wilson used a leaping, outstretched reach to corral the chance with 90 seconds remaining.

Millsaps will return to SAA action by hosting Sewanee on Friday. First kick is slated for 7 p.m. with live video and live stats provided at gomajors.com.
