Women’s Soccer Downed by League-Leading Sewanee, Centre

Majors were Bested by the Tigers 4-0, the Colonels 3-1 over the Weekend

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's soccer team played two games over the weekend, falling to Sewanee, 4-0 on Friday and battling Centre to a 3-1 defeat on Sunday at Harper Davis Field.

Match 1: Sewanee 4, Millsaps 0

Millsaps sophomore goalkeeper Emily Lozano finished with seven saves and fifth year Riley Ely recorded a shot on goal in Friday's tough matchup against SAA-leading Sewanee. The Majors were bested by a score of 4-0.

The Tigers recorded two chances off the woodwork in the opening eight minutes, keeping Lozano busy early.

Sewanee would get two goals back-to-back, with the first being scored in the 9th minute and the second being scored a minute later, both by Brianna Fee.

Fee would add to her goal tally with another strike scored in the 17th minute of the match. Fee's three-goal performance was made even more impressive since she only played 24 total minutes.

Ely would force Sewanee keeper Leah Atkins to make a quality stop in the 29th minute of the opening half.

The second frame saw the Majors steadying themselves defensively, with Lozano adding a strong save in the 60th minute.

The Tigers would put the match away in the 65th minute from a goal off the foot of Amy Martin.

Match 2: Centre 3, Millsaps 1

Millsaps claimed an early advantage over league-best Centre, who finished the match tied with Sewanee in the standings. The Colonels battled back for a 3-1, hard-fought win.

Lozano made some huge saves early on, finishing Sunday's match with an impressive nine stops. Freshman Becca Quick garnered her first collegiate goal and sophomore Ally Hearn added a shot on target.

However, the Majors would get on the board first following three shot attempts. A failed Centre clearance would find the foot of quick, who volleyed the ball from the top of the box into the back of the net in the 34th minute.

The Majors put up an impressive defensive showing for much of the game, with Lozano producing another stop in the 50th minute.

Centre would equalize in the 52nd minute from a goal scored by Megan Sidaway. The Colonels then took the lead in the 73rd minute off a Alexis Kronenthal tally.

Despite the strong defensive performance by the Majors, Centre would add insurance in the 79th minute from a goal by Annabel Justice off an assist by Lydia Bowling.

Millsaps will conclude the regular season by welcoming Birmingham-Southern on Homecoming Weekend. The Majors and Panthers will face off on Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m. with live video and live stats provided at gomajors.com.
