JACKSON, Miss.
– The Millsaps men's soccer team played host to two Southern Athletic Association matchups over the weekend. The first match was against Sewanee on Friday, which saw the Tigers claim a 3-0 victory before by the Majors fell short to Centre, 3-2 on Sunday.
Match 1: Sewanee 3, Millsaps 0
Millsaps sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Hamauei would end the match with six total saves and senior forward
Jacks Dowdy finished with two shots on goal against Sewanee (4-3-6, 1-1-3 SAA).
The Majors had a quick scoring opportunity with senior
Sebastiani Maraldo getting a shot in the 2nd minute, which sailed just over the bar. The Tigers scored early moments later in the 4th minute of the match.
The next 30 minutes saw the Majors generating a few shots, one of which was by Dowdy that was stopped. Hamauei would make two big saves in the 15th minute of the match to keep the Majors within one.
Sewanee would score again in the 37th minute off a shot by
Austin Miller.
The second half was a defensive battle for both sides. Sophomore
Ai Suzuki nearly put the Majors on the board after hitting the woodwork in the 49th minute. However, the Tigers would put the game away from a goal scored by Stokes McConnell in the 64th minute.
Match 2: Centre 3, Millsaps 2
Millsaps then faced off against Centre College on Sunday in what was a thrilling affair, with both sides generating lots of chance. In the end, Centre would come out on top, 3-2 with some last-minute heroics.
Hamauei finished with eight saves and Suzuki garnered his first collegiate goal, which was assisted by junior
Kade Folse.
The Majors would get their first goal in the 18th minute from an own goal scored by the Sewanee defense. A miscommunication between and defender and goalie led to a gaffe in the back of the net.
Millsaps scored again in the 22nd minute from a cross by Folse which was finished off by Suzuki, putting the Majors up 2-0 early on.
The second half saw the Majors holding on strong for the first ten minutes. Hamauei would make three big-time saves during this time period.
Centre would break through with three chances in the 55th minute from a finish by Finnigan Deem-Ranzetta.
The visitors would equalize from a goal scored by Matthew Seran in the 65th minute following four corner kicks.
The next ten minutes saw both sides generating chances, with Hamauei making saves in the 69th and 76th minutes. Millsaps freshman
Greer Hernandez also got an in-close shot off in the 66th minute following the tying goal.
Centre would find the game-deciding tally after a previous opportunity was called back because of a push in the box. However, the Colonels would go ahead, 3-2 in 79th minute from a penalty shot, solidifying the match in their favor.
