MEMPHIS, Tenn. & CONWAY, Ark. – The Millsaps volleyball team were stopped in a pair of conference matches at Rhodes on Saturday in five sets (9-25, 25-19, 25-10, 19-25, 14-16) and at Hendrix on Sunday in four sets (25-17, 19-25, 17-25, 23-25).
Match 1: Rhodes 3, Millsaps 2
(9-25, 25-19, 25-10, 19-25, 14-16)
Rhodes used a 16-7 service ace advantage to claim the match in five sets on Saturday inside the Mallory Gymnasium.
Junior
Zoe Elder posted a double-double with six kills, 32 assists and 10 digs while classmate
Anna Capezzera recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Seniors
Brenna Macaluso finished with seven kills and 15 digs,
Margaret Richardson netted 17 digs,
Ashlyn Moore added a career-high nine kills, while sophomore
Mallory Richardson reached eight kills.
Opening the matchup, the Lynx built a 6-2 lead. A kill by Macaluso would shorten the deficit to 6-4, but Rhodes would continue their momentum with a 13-5 margin over the Majors. Rhodes would claim the first set, 25-9.
Set two saw Millsaps take an early 9-3 lead. A kill by Elder and
Mallory Richardson would grow the Majors' advantage to 13-5. The Lynx would use a 5-0 run to claw the deficit back to 21-17, but the Majors would close out the set, 25-19.
The Majors opened the third set with an impressive 13-2 margin. Millsaps would extend its dominance to 21-5 before Capezzera and Macaluso would finish off the set at 25-10.
Rhodes burst into a 6-1 lead in the fourth set. The Lynx would continue stacking points to build a 21-12 cushion and eventually tie the match with a 25-19 set win.
In the final set the teams combined for nine ties and four lead changes. Rhodes took an early 2-0 lead, the Majors would answer back with a 4-0 run to hold a narrow 5-4 advantage. A service error alongside an attack error would give Millsaps a 12-10 lead later on.
Rhodes would rally for four additional points to hold match point. The match then knotted up at 14-14 with two Lynx attack errors, but back-to-back Rhodes kills helped the hosts claim the final set and match, 16-14.
Match 2: Hendrix 3, Millsaps 1
(25-17, 19-25, 17-25, 23-25)
Elder nearly generated another double-double in Sunday's match with 32 assists and nine digs.
Capezzera almost finished with a second double-double as well after tallying 11 kills and nine digs.
Mallory Richardson recorded 12 kills and three digs, while
Macaluso tallied nine kills and seven digs. Sophomore
Ally Baer added five aces.
The first set saw six ties and three lead changes. Hendrix opened the contest with a 7-3 lead, but the Majors would build a 6-0 run to take an 21-14 advantage. Millsaps would close the set strong at 25-17 with a huge kill by both Macaluso and Capezzera.
The Warriors began the second set leading 12-6 on a 6-0 run. A pair of attack errors would eventually cut the lead down by six again at 19-13. The Majors would add a few more points, but the Warriors took away the second set, 25-19.
In the third set Millsaps fell behind 9-2. However, the Majors would cut the lead down to 11-7 with a Capezzera kill and two Hendrix errors.
The Majors continued putting up a fight, scoring three consecutive points on three occasions. Hendrix held on in set three, 25-17.
In the final set the teams were knotted up six times and traded the lead on five occasions. Hendrix started ahead 4-1 run, but fierce kills by Moore, Capezzera and Elder would tie the set at 8-8. Both teams continued trading points back and forth but eventually a kill by Moore and three attack errors would place the Majors ahead, 15-12.
Hendrix would eventually answer back with a 6-0 rally to take the lead at 18-15 and notch three of the next four points after that.
The fourth set would come down to the wire with Hendrix leading by one point courtesy of an Elder ace, with Millsaps trailing at 24-23. The Warriors used a final kill to secure the win at 25-23.
Majors will remain on the road to face Centre on Saturday, Oct. 21, beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
