DANVILLE, Ky. & SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps volleyball team fell in a pair of SAA road matches to Centre (23-25, 15-25, 24-26) and Sewanee (18-25, 23-25, 22-25) on Sunday.
Match 1: Centre 3, Millsaps 0
(23-25, 15-25, 24-26)
Anna Capezzera netted eight kills and nine digs, senior
Brenna Macaluso finished with three kills, five blocks and 10 digs, classmate
Ashlyn Moore recorded six kills, while junior
Zoe Elder posted five kills and 21 assists on Saturday.
Sophomore
Mallory Richardson added eight kills and senior
Margaret Richardson finished with 11 kills.
In the first set both teams were trading points back and forth with 13 ties and eight lead exchanges. Centre would eventually take control by taking an 14-10 lead. Millsaps however would use the help of two sophomore
Ally Baer service aces, a Capezzera kill and Elder kill to create a 6-0 run, posting a 16-14 lead.
The Colonels would fight back with five of the next six points, but the Majors would respond again on a 4-0 rally off of two attack errors, another Elder kill and with Capezzera kill to take a 21-19 advantage.
The final points were a tug-of-war between both teams, with the Majors utilizing a service error to take a 23-22 lead. With the set on the line, the Colonels used a service error and two kills to pull out the first set, 25-23.
The Majors fell behind early in the second set, 6-2. A Macaluso kill would cut the Majors' deficit to 7-5. Centre would eventually create a 6-0 run to hold a 22-12 advantage. The hosts pulled away to take the second set, 25-15.
In the final set, Centre opened with a 3-1 lead. A kill by
Mallory Richardson would later help her teammates cut the lead to 10-8. Trailing 21-13, the Majors took advantage off two attack errors, a service error and a kill by Moore to open a 4-0 run.
Going on a hot streak, Millsaps attacked the Colonels with two attack errors, a service ace, and another crucial kill by Moore to give Millsaps a 4-0 run.
Facing match and behind 24-20, a kill by Macaluso and
Margaret Richardson and a pair of attack errors would tie the match. The Colonels responded by powering home back-to-back kills to claim the match, 26-24.
Match 2: Sewanee 3, Millsaps 0
(18-25, 23-25, 22-25)
On Sunday,
Elder posted four kills, 26 assists and six digs,
Capezzera netted 10 kills, three service aces and four digs, while
Margaret Richardson led the team with 12 digs and
Macaluso tallied eight kills and nine digs.
In the first set, the Tigers took an early 10-4 lead. However the set would tighten up to a 15-15 draw. The Tigers would eventually break away on a 4-0 run to push ahead, 19-15.
A kill by Elder would cut the lead down to 22-18 before Sewanee closed the set on a 3-0 burst to take the first set, 25-18.
The second set saw the Majors fell behind 5-2. A kill later by Macaluso would tie the match at 7-7. The score would continue being knotted up before a kill by the Tigers would put them ahead 22-20.
The Majors would attempt to make a comeback with a kill by Elder and a service ace, but the Tigers would narrowly claim the set, 25-23 with a kill of their own followed by a bad set.
Millsaps looked to rebound in the third set, leading 9-5. A 4-0 run by the Tigers would cut the lead down to 13-11. Sewanee would eventually use a service ace and a kill to tie the third at 16-16.
Both teams continued exchanging points and be tied up at 20-20.
The Majors would add points off a service error and Macaluso kill, but Sewanee would take five of the last seven points to claim the match at 25-22.
Millsaps will return home to face Berry on Friday, Oct. 27 inside the Hangar Dome, beginning at 3 p.m. Live video and stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
