Millsaps Volleyball Powers Past Birmingham-Southern in SAA Comeback Victory

Majors Overcome 2-0 Deficit as Brenna Macaluso, Zoe Elder Record Double-Doubles on Wednesday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps volleyball team (9-7, 3-3 SAA) took down Birmingham-Southern (7-10, 3-3 SAA) in a heart-pounding, defensive comeback performance (18-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10) on Wednesday. The Majors found themselves down two sets, but were able to rally back and pounce on the Panthers, 3-2 in an SAA matchup inside the Hangar Dome.

Junior Zoe Elder (34 assists, 14 digs) and senior Brenna Macaluso (12 kills, 13 digs) led with double-doubles. Classmate Margaret Richardson paced the Majors with 28 digs, while junior Anna Capezzera (11 kills, four total blocks) and sophomore Mallory Richardson (10 kills) reached double digit kills.

Both teams set the tone of a hard-fought match in the first set with eight ties and three lead changes. Millsaps led as late as 14-12, but the Panthers came alive for the final six points to take the first set, 25-18.

Set two was another terrific tug-of-war contest, with 11 ties and one lead change. Millsaps carried a 13-9 advantage, but the visitors stormed back to take a 19-17 advantage.

The Majors would utilize back-and-forth kills to even the score 22-22. BSC would push back once more to pull out a 25-23 win in set two.

Looking for a spark, Margaret Richardson built a 10-0 advantage in the third set as she took control with her serve. Back-to-back attack errors would help Millsaps lead by as much as 18-5. The Panthers would claw into the deficit, but sophomore Trista Naquin and Mallory Richardson would help the Majors close the third set with kills at 25-18.

The fourth set saw five ties and three lead exchanges. Millsaps used a crucial 4-0 run to grab an 18-13 edge midway through the set. BSC would eventually cut the deficit to a 22-21 deficit, but a service error, attack error and sophomore Ally Baer kill helped the Majors secure the victory in the fourth, 25-22.

BSC took an early 2-0 lead in the final set, but Millsaps eventually came back with a 4-0 rally and pair of 3-0 bursts to open the match at 10-6.

The Panthers would later call a timeout hoping to change their game plan, but as the match progressed BSC would find themselves down, 14-10. A kill by Macaluso would help seal the victory a point later.

The Majors earned their fifth home triumph of the season and first win over Birmingham-Southern since April 2021.
