Men’s Basketball Controls Glass, Paint in Triumph over Centenary

Balanced Scoring, Shooting Effort Downs Gents, 75-62 on Sunday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team controlled the interior and dominated the glass to down Centenary College, 75-62 inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.

The Majors outrebounded the Gents, 42-27 and possessed a 34-20 edge in points in the paint.

Millsaps also outshot Centenary 48.3 percent (28-of-58) to 31.1 percent (19-of-61). The Gents would hold a 20-11 turnover advantage to keep the contest close.

Sophomore Dakota Gasca tallied a team-high 16 points, while adding four assists and seven rebounds. Junior Drew Roth grabbed a career-high 13 boards and three other Majors reached double figures in scoring, including freshman Cameron Lumar (13 points), senior Aaron Ursin (12 points), and sophomore Rodney Phillips Jr. (10 points).

Freshman Devin Harris also accumulated six points, seven rebounds, four assists and grabbed a steal.

The Gents tallied the game's first basket and led 14-13 midway through the opening period, but that would be their final lead of the day.

Gasca and Roth would combine for three consecutive treys to push Millsaps out front, 24-16 moments later. The visitors would claw back to cut the deficit to 28-27 at intermission following an extremely even opening 20 minutes.

The first few possessions of the second half would stay even. Centenary netted a three-pointer with 12:24 left on the clock to make it a 44-43 Millsaps advantage, but would be held without a field goal for nearly eight minutes to follow.

Millsaps grew their lead to 13 points during the defensive stand before Lumar provided a closing dagger, three-pointer, which put the Majors ahead by 15 with 1:47 to play.

Millsaps would make good at the free-throw line down the stretch and earn a solid, 75-62 victory.

The Majors will remain at home and welcome Huntingdon College for a rematch from an earlier meeting this season. First tip is slated for 5 p.m. on Wednesday with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
